I absolutely love this song and band but they are geographically challenged." But he's a-headed west from the Cumberland Gap To Johnson City, Tennessee." You can't get to Johnson City, TN headed west. It is east of Cumberland Gap.
Sue Strong:
🎼 Old Crow Medicine Show - Wagon Wheel [Official Music Video] - The "real" Wagon Wheel... ✍️ co-written by Bob Dylan, Dylan writes the chorus and melody, left the song an unfinished sketch. Then Ketch Secor wrote verses for the song around Dylan's original chorus (and melody). Dylan releases a bootleg recording of the chorus in 1973, usually named after the chorus and its refrain, "Rock Me Mama"; Secor added verses 25 years later. Secor "feeling homesick for the South," added verses about "hitchhiking his way home full of romantic notions put in his head by Dylan. Secor's verses tell "the story of a man who travels from New England, through Philadelphia, PA and Roanoke, VA, down the eastern coast of the United States, ending up in Raleigh, North Carolina, where he hopes to see his lover." The Secor lyrics contain a geographic impossibility: heading "west from the Cumberland Gap" to Johnson City, Tennessee "you'd have to go east." As Secor explains: "I got some geography wrong, but I still sing it that way. I just wanted the word 'west' in there. 'West' has got more power than 'east.' As Secor says: "In a way, it's taken something like 85 years to get completed." In 2004 Secor & Dylan signed a co-writing agreement agreeing to a "50–50 split in authorship. Old Crow Medicine Show's final version was certified Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America in April 2013.

The song has been covered numerous times, notably by Nathan Carter in 2012 and Darius Rucker in 2013. Rucker's version reached No. 1 on the Hot Country Songs chart and was certified triple Platinum by the RIAA in March 2014. The "Old Medicine Show" was inducted into the Grand Ole Opry on September 17, 2013. But best version yet. The group's music has been called old-time, folk, and alternative country. Along with original songs, the band performs many pre-World War II blues and folk songs. The "real" Wagon Wheel...

"Wagon Wheel" Lyrics:

Headed down south to the land of the pines
And I'm thumbin' my way into North Caroline
Starin' up the road
Pray to God I see headlights

I made it down the coast in seventeen hours
Pickin' me a bouquet of dogwood flowers
And I'm a-hopin' for Raleigh
I can see my baby tonight

So rock me, mama, like a wagon wheel
Rock me, mama, any way you feel
Hey, mama rock me
Rock me, mama, like the wind and the rain
Rock me, mama, like a south-bound train
Hey, mama rock me

Runnin' from the cold up in New England
I was born to be a fiddler in an old-time string band
My baby plays the guitar
I pick a banjo now

Oh, the North country winters keep a-gettin' me now
Lost my money playin' poker so I had to up and leave
But I ain't a-turnin' back
To livin' that old life no more

So rock me, mama, like a wagon wheel
Rock me, mama, any way you feel
Hey, mama rock me
Rock me, mama, like the wind and the rain
Rock me, mama, like a south-bound train
Hey, mama rock me

Walkin' to the south out of Roanoke
I caught a trucker out of Philly
Had a nice long toke
But he's a-headed west from the Cumberland Gap
To Johnson City, Tennessee

And I got to get a move on before the sun
I hear my baby callin' my name
And I know that she's the only one
And if I die in Raleigh
At least I will die free

So rock me, mama, like a wagon wheel
Rock me, mama, any way you feel
Hey, mama rock me
Rock me, mama, like the wind and the rain
Rock me, mama, like a south-bound train
